Qualifications and Standards
all candidates:
cannot nominate themselves; they must be nominated by a doctorate faculty member.
must forego the fellowship if not enrolled full-time in a PhD program for the two succeeding academic years of the grant.
In order for the fellowship to be applied to the last two years of study, candidates need have three years left in their program at the time of nomination.
from nations on which the United States has an embargo are ineligible for the program.
that are receiving a comparable fellowship, internship, or support during the IBM PhD Fellowship funding period from another organization or institution are ineligible for this award. Additionally, recipients of this award must remain in the same program for the duration of the award—no transferring of departments or schools is permitted.
Awardees will be selected based upon
their capacity for superior research. For the entirety of the award term, each awardee will have an IBM mentor, and interning is highly recommended during the first or second year of the award. When is the application time for the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship?
The yearly IBM Ph.D. nominations are made by faculties. Every year, the Fellowship program takes place in the autumn, however the actual dates and hours might change. The application period for 2023 is still open and will go from October 11 to November 5. Depending on the completion of the necessary paperwork and due diligence procedures, notification of nominee status occurs in the early spring. It is suggested that all candidates submit all required paperwork on time.
If I get more than one fellowship, scholarship, or internship during the award term, are I still eligible?
The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship is not available to students who receive a comparable fellowship, scholarship, internship, or research funding from another government agency, business, or institution during the same academic year that IBM is funding their studies. This does not include academic scholarships.

Is the internship a requirement?
While not required, the internship is strongly advised. Many IBM Ph.D. Fellowship students who are now employed by various businesses tell us that the internships helped them better understand the industrial research, development, or consulting environments, which assisted them in making more informed career selections. Additionally, it enhances their technical expertise and broadens their network of technical connections.
If my nominee is given an IBM Ph.D. Fellowship, how will I find out?
Final selection of award winners will be place in 2Q 2023. All nominated candidates will soon get an email alerting them of their status as nominees. The award recipients will also get a formal letter of congratulations, but the prize won’t be given until the academic member works with IBM Global University Program to complete the necessary due diligence paperwork.
